My job is to help students learn all of their Common Core State Standards by the end of the school year. My goal is for every student to have a clear and concrete understanding of the content and for the student to achieve "Proficiency" and/or "Mastery" for each standard.
Students are expected to record practice and upcoming quizzes in his/her planner daily. All summative assessments will be graded on the Proficiency Continuum (see below). Math homework/practice is required and will be counted as part of your student's grade. Students can expect to have approximately 15-20 minutes of homework, 3-4 nights a week. Students are expected to complete or at least attempt each practice problem. Even if a problem is at least attempted, there is much more learning going on than if the problem is skipped altogether.
The new report card will have a section for each class with a separate score/grade for what is called "Career Related Learning Standards", CRLS. These will include skills such as; work completion and work habits, independence and initiative, cooperation and participation, and absences and tardies.
Proficiency-Based Grading
Continuum
MASTERY
(MAS)- (Traditional A) Through extensive evidence, the student
consistently surpasses the proficient level and demonstrates
an in-depth understanding of the
standard.
ADVANCED
(ADV)- (Traditional B) The student regularly meets
the standard and demonstrates a working knowledge of essential skills.
While there are still some weaknesses, the strengths are
dominant.
MEETS
(M)- (Traditional C) Though the student is occasionally demonstrating a
working knowledge of the essential skills that encompass the standard,
there are more weaknesses than strengths.
APPROACHING
(APP)- (Traditional D) Partial understanding
with some skill demonstrated with greater omissions or errors
evident.
BEGINNING
(BEG)- (Traditional F) No understanding or skill
demonstrated yet.
